Below, she shares her experience at Belhaven University: Describe the campus setting and transportation options. Daisha: I enjoyed the campus setting. It has a very calm and inviting atmosphere that makes you feel welcome. I was a transfer student, so I didnt take advantage of the campus transportation options. How available are the professors, academic advisors, and teaching assistants? Daisha:Every instructor is different, but for the most part, everyone makes themselves available and responds quickly when needed. If one person doesnt know the answer, theyre happy to refer you to someone that can help. How would you describe the dorm liferooms, dining options, location, socialization opportunities with other students, etc.? Daisha:I didnt take advantage of many of the dining options on campus. It was, however, fairly easy to meet others. I felt there were many opportunities to interact with other students while on campus. Which majors/programs are best represented and supported? What did you study and why? Daisha:All majors and programs are well represented and supported. My area of study is psychology. I found an interest in this field in middle school, and always knew that this was a field I would enjoy pursuing. How easy or difficult was it for you to meet people and make friends as a freshman? Does Greek life play a significant role in the campus social life? Daisha:It really wasnt difficult to meet others. Most of my classes early on required group assignments, so most of the friendships I have now came from there. Greek life doesnt play a significant role in the campus social life. How helpful are the Career Center and other student support services? Daisha:During my time at the university, I found the Career Center very helpful. How are the various study areas, such as libraries, the student union, and dorm lounges? Daisha:The library isnt a walk through libraryyou just pick up your books and go to class. From the study spaces I have seen, though, I have enjoyed them. Describe the surrounding town. Daisha:The surrounding town offers restaurants and stores for students to explore. All of this is in close proximity to campus, so students can take advantage of these between classes or on weekends. How big or small is the student body? Were you generally pleased or displeased with the typical class sizes? Daisha:The student body is a fair size, and I often see the same people when walking around campus. I was pleased with the class sizes I experienced. Describe one memorable experience with a professor and/or class. Perhaps one you loved the most or one you regret the most. Daisha:One memorable experience that I had was in sociology class. In this specific class, we were required to do an assignment that really delved into your personal life, and share what we wrote in class. 5 Hacks For When You’re Lost in a Spanish Conversation Suzy S. As you practice speaking, listening, and having real-time Spanish conversations, dont fret if you start feeling lost. Get back on track with these tips from tutor  Simion G. Have you ever been chatting with someone in your non-native language, when suddenly you find yourself struggling to keep up? It happens to us all, from beginner language learners to fluent speakers and everyone in between. Even I, as a Spanish tutor, still have moments when I completely lose track  of what is being discussed. But if (and when) it happens to you, dont feel embarrassed. Take a deep breath, regroup, and get yourself back on track. Not sure how to do that? Here  are my tips 1) Acknowledge your Position Dont  be afraid to admit to yourself youre feeling lost. Sure, it can be frustrating, especially if youve been studying Spanish for a long time. But dont allow this to destroy your confidence. As a matter of fact,  realizing  youre lost will get you  one step closer to learning something new! 2) Inform your Conversation Partner Next, make sure you let the other person know! Its better for the other person to know youre struggling rather than think you understand. Dont be embarrassed!  Here are some phrases you can use during your Spanish conversation practice: If you think you know, but the conversation is moving too fast: “Perdón, no entiendo. ¿Podrías repitir?” (Excuse me/Sorry, I dont understand. Could you repeat?) If youre certain you dont know the word or phrase: “Lo siento, no sé la palabra/la frase. ¿Qué significa?”  (Im sorry, I dont know the word/phrase. What does it mean?) If everything is scrambled eggs and you just want it over-easy: “No comprendo nada. Estoy perdido.” (I dont understand anything. Im lost.) “ ¿Puedes ayudarme a entender?” (Can you help me understand?) 3) Recall the Tense Are you hearing words that sound familiar, but arent quite what you remember? Chances are the tense of the conversation has shifted. Conjugation indicates  the differences between what happened in the past, whats happening today, what will happen in the future, and what could hypothetically or possibly occur. It can also indicate who the verb refers to (he/she/we/etc.). The only way to combat this is to study the different tenses and conjugations  in Spanish, so I recommend finding a well-structured conjugation chart to have on hand. Or, create your own! Writing the charts  out with pen and paper was the best method for me when I was first learning Spanish. The process of making the chart yourself will engrave it in your mind, forever making you a conjugation wizard. 4) Dont Panic. Focus. If  youve followed the previous steps and still feel lost, dont sweat it. Take a deep breath (or three) and relax. When trying to convey a word or phrase that you cant remember (or dont know), or making sense of what someone has said to you, the solution is simple: resort to the basics.  You may want to memorize a few conversational Spanish phrases that can help you understand or describe what you mean, even if you cant remember the exact words. For example: When describing what you know: Significa la materia verde encima de la tierra.  (=  â€œCésped”) (It means the green stuff above the soil = Grass) When figuring out what someone else has said: ¿Es significa al amigo mejor de los humanos, un animal domesticado?  (= “Los Perros”) (Does it mean humans best friend, a domesticated animal? = Dogs) Other Spanish phrases: ¿Estás hablando sobre? (Are you speaking about) Es en relación a  (Its  in relation to) 5) Speak with Confidence You know the saying, right? “Assumptions, they need to be made.” Well, sort of. This should never be the first option when trying to pull yourself back to the light of a conversation, but there are situations when its beneficial. This route can actually provide a subconscious alternative to learning. Assume what youre about to say is right and say it with confidence, even if you know you may be wrong. Theres a high chance of someone providing a correction, or just  make a mental note and look into it in the near future. Either way, this will provide an experience thats more likely to stick in your head. Conclusion I suggest practicing these tips whenever you have the opportunity to do so. Practice them not only in face-to-face conversation, but also while watching a movie, listening to music, or reading a book. As my 7th grade science teacher and cross country coach would say when I forgot my homework or cramped up in a race, “Proper planning prevents pitiful performances.” It sounds harsh, but its  a saying thats maintained truth throughout my life.  Learn these tips before you get stuck, and youll know just what to do! 8 Things We Learned at CONARH 2015 - Useful Lessons for Expos We hope you enjoyed CONARH 2015 as much as we did! We learned a lot during the show, and had a few frustrating and funny things happen. We wanted to share our story of CONARH and what we learned. (Leia-o aqui em Português).1. Always double check flight itineraries. The LOI English team at CONARH 2015. Left to right, Paul, Adriana, Daniel, Hugo.Hugo Pacheco, a member of LOI’s CONARH team, sent me a Whatsapp at 07:28 on Friday, August 14, to let me know that he was in the lounge at Guarulhos airport, and that I could take my time getting to him. There was one problem. I was still 10,435 kilometers away in Whitefish, Montana, USA packing my bags. Hugo’s message scared me. Did I miss my flight? I ran to my computer and checked my itinerary, and confirmed for Hugo that he was 24 hours early.2. Murphy’s Law Anything that can go wrong, will go wrong.I had a stop in Chicago before heading to Guarulhos. It was an overnight flight, which would give me all day Saturday, August 15 to enj oy São Paulo. As we boarded our plane, it started raining hard outside. Soon there was lightening and thunder. The flight was delayed and then cancelled. Hugo thought I was joking this time. I had to find a hotel in the outskirts of Chicago and catch a flight the next day at noon, which landed me in Guarulhos at 02:00. By the time I got into my apartment and in bed, it was 04:00. It was a good thing I planned on arriving a full day before CONARH.3. Have a plan…We planned a long time for our trip to CONARH, and spent a lot of money (for a small company) on a banner, an iPad podium, and two really nice giveaway prizes an AppleWatch and an iPad. I was 100 percent sure that 1,000s of people would flock to our stand and give us their emails once they learned about our prizes. 4. then burn the plan.Despite our plans, which we made having never done a trade show, people did not flock to our stand. In fact, people hardly looked at it. At first we thought it was because none of our banne rs mentioned the giveaway, so we had an enormous poster printed with the iPad and AppleWatch. It helped a little, but not much. I may be an Apple geek, but the people at CONARH didn’t seem interested. We needed to change tactics completely.5. Get comfortable outside your comfort zone.Ultimately, the only way we made contact with customers was by approaching them and talking to them directly about what we offered. The four of us, Adriana Menoli, Daniel Madruga, Hugo and I are used to working behind computers all day, and had never done anything like this. Despite that, we all persevered, and by the end of the show everyone seemed comfortable approaching complete strangers to tell them about our English and Spanish classes. Our notes show that we spoke to more than 700 individuals at CONARH!6. How to beat Murphy’s Law.Things went wrong throughout the show. I locked several important things, including a medication that I need to take every night, in my hotel safe and forgot the com bination. Daniel and Adriana got really sick (but continued working hard anyways). Parts of our display were damaged and lost during the flight, and could not be used. The very first people I approached at CONARH to talk to about our product looked at me like I was crazy and said “não.” Later we realized they were hearing impaired. Despite all these things, our team continued to work hard, and everything that went wrong eventually became a funny story we told.7. Expos  are not easy!Before going to CONARH, I attended a webinar that warned not to let your team party too much the night before shows. This was never even close to a problem for us usually after dinner we were too tired to have more than 1 beer before bed. It never occurred to me that running a stand at a tradeshow all day would be exhausting work, but it was! At first I thought it was just me, because I was using Portuguese way more than I was accustomed to. But the rest of the LOI team, Hugo, Adriana and Daniel, ar e native Portuguese speakers, and they were all exhausted too. It takes a lot of focus and energy to spend a day explaining a product to people, and we felt it. 8. The show is the beginning.When the show was over, we had made a lot of new contacts that we were excited about, but we realized that, just like with our stand, we couldn’t just sit back and wait for good things to happen now. The work of a exposition like CONARH takes place in the weeks and months after the show is over.
